Arcturus' second album is quite a change from the debut. This is where they truly become avant garde and theatrical and I honestly must say that this is my least favorite Arcturus album. The black metal vocals are all gone and replaced by clean vocals, and these are done remarkably well. I don't have a problem with the clean vocals - on the contrary I find them to be highly enjoyable. Arcturus purists probably won't like this but I simply don't find the songs here memorable at all. There is one exception - "Ad Astra" that with its orchestration adds a great atmosphere and really lifts this album up. Too bad there weren't more Ad Astras though. Another thing I dislike with this album is the production and especially the drums which sound flat and lack bottom end. Still, an important album and in its own right defining a new path for black metal. - defender666
