Ancient: The cainian chronicle

This is Ancient's second album, preceded by Svartalvheim (1994) which I haven't heard. Black metal from Norway is what we get here although the production by Dan Swanö is much clearer than most contemporary acts of the mid 90's. What also strikes me here is the frequent and front positioned keyboards, some of them apparently performed by Kimberly Goss. All in all, this is decent black metal but not groundbreaking in any way of course. "The Cainian Chronicle" tracks are maybe the most memorable songs here, especially part II, "Lilith's Embrace" spiced up with female vocals by Kimberly Goss. This album was not convincing enough though for me to pursue any other records in the Ancient catalog. - defender666
