This is a 2009 re-issue of Amon Amarth's debut album from 1998. Metal Blade plans to re-release the first four albums during 2009. I am a late discoverer of this band and I have to say it seems I have missed out on a great great band. This album is choked with memorable, melodic (mostly midtempo) death metal with the viking theme present throughout. A fantastic debut (even though the band had released the EP "Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds" on Pulverised previously. Disc 2 contains a live recording from Bochum in 2008 where the band performs the album in its entirety and I have to say it sounds absolutely great. You can tell that this is a touring band and all the routine built up from ten years of touring really shines through here. Olavi Mikkonen is a great songwriter and the vocals of Johan Hegg are magnificent. His growl covers the entire spectrum from really low-end thunder to high pitched shrieks. In some places there are even some kind of drunken viking sounding parts. In all, this is a great death metal album and I really look forward to the coming re-issues from Metal Blade. - defender666
