In the nascent days of Everything But the Girl, Tracey Thorn wrote the downers while partner Ben Watt penned the more sentimental numbers. But that was before Watt was cut down with a rare disease that left him in a perpetual state of near-death. On this album, Watt matches his significant other's bittersweet English odes of lost love with his own songs of deep confusion and smashed hope. The emotions here get so bleak that Thorn's chorus to "Missing" ("I miss you like the deserts miss the rain") sounded positively life-affirming in comparison and nabbed the duo their first global smash. - Greger
