John Arch: A Twist of Fate

Ex Fates Warning singer John Arch is my absolute favorite metal vocalist of all times. The work he does on the first three Fates Warning albums is unparallelled to this day. So anticipations were high when I heard that he would once again team up with FW mastermind Jim Matheos for this solo release. This album contains two lengthy tracks of progressive metal and the music sounds a lot like latter day Fates Warning. What about the vocals then? Ah, John Arch still delivers and the singing on this album moved me to tears. I have really missed that voice for years and he still sounds great, even reaching the high notes from the old days. The liner notes by Arch himself are also moving to read since he decided to leave the music business for family life reasons and running his own company. There is no bitterness or regrets to be found here however, but rather the words of a happy man regretting nothing, just being proud of the legacy he left behind and happy to be able to make this one off record sort of saying a final farewell to the scene he once belonged to. Arch was actually auditioning for Dream Theater after Dominici got the boot but even this offer could not make him stray off the family/work path he was already upon. "A Twist Of Fate" is a great record with metal's best voice ever. Get this, but more important, get the three first Fates Warning albums if you haven't already! - defender666
