At The Gates' debut album is a highly unique entry in the Swedish death metal catalog. Chaotic, very melodic and highly unorthodox song structures make for an unforgettable experience, topped by the hysterical vocals from Tompa Lindberg. This album made a huge impression on me when it came out even if I at the time of course could not guess how influential this band would turn out to be. There is one weak point here of course: the production is downright lousy which is a shame since the songs in themselves are so good. This album probably would end up on a top 5 of a hypothetic list of "albums I would like to see re-recorded with a better production". Witnessing the band during the 2008 re-union tour and hearing those songs with a really powerful sound was awesome and a much needed reminder of how brilliant this album was and still is. A classic and a must for anyone into Swedish death metal. - defender666
