If there is one album that set the standard for the entire melodic death metal scene, it's got to be this one. At The Gates' swansong album is a phenomenal display of crushing, to the point and insanely masterfully crafted death metal. If the songs were more direct than the earlier stuff on "Terminal Spirit Disease", it has surely been perfected here. In your face and totally devastating stuff. The mixture of melodic lines, all out aggression and excellent songwriting has not been overcome in this kind of death metal yet and probably never will. This album is one you cannot do without, there are simply no weak parts to be found here. The word classic is often used a little too light heartedly but definitely deserves its place here. At The Gates absolutely called it quits at their peak as this would have been very hard to top for the band. A more than worthy exit for any band. - defender666
